What we do - Ekadaksha Learning Center Chennai - By Stephen Eastop

Vidhyashankar-Star of October 2020, ELC, Chennai*VIDYASHANKAR* 

Age:  8 years

During the lockdown: Positive changes in understanding and expressing. He has also developed an interest in learning. 

Communication & Socialising: His ability to understand has improved. He has started to express his agreement or disagreement through emotions, words and sentences. He is now able to understand emotions as well as the situations in which we use different emotions. His relationship with his grandparents has improved.He is very involved and participates in all online fun sessions which Ekadaksha has conducted.  

Activities of daily living: He is becoming independent in brushing teeth and bathing. He is eating independently. He has also developed a routine of exercising for one hour everyday.  

Helping at home: He helps his parents in folding clothes and other general household chores. . 

Academic activities: He is very interested in attendning his online classes at Ekadaksha with his class teacher. He listens and is involved in all activities. His father has taken an initiative of developing a software to help him learn and do worksheets. All this has helped in improving his learning capacities. 


Shivani- Star of October 2020, ELC, Chennai*SHIVANI*

Age: 11 years

During the lockdown: Positive changes in communication, confidence and bonding with little sister. She has also developed an interest in learning. 

Communication & Socialising: She has improved a lot in communication. She is able to understand what is being spoken to her as well as express herself appropriately. She has developed a preference to talk in English. She is now interested to know new English words and their meanings. 

She is a child who gets emotionally attached to people and loves to mingle and make friends. She has developed a bond with her younger sister and loves playing with her.  She empathises with her mother when her mother is not feeling well and tries to take care of her. 

She is very involved and participates well in the online sessions of her class as well as fun events conducted by Ekadaksha. 

Activities of daily living: She has become independent in all her ADLs and has started exercising too. 

Helping at home: She contributes by washing vessels. Sometimes she tries to make dosas with the help of her mother. 

Academic activities: She is enjoying and looks forward to her online classes for which she logs in all by herself. She takes initiative to read the calendar everyday. Though she struggles, she has started enjoying studying and learning new things. 


Arvindswamy- Star of October 2020, ELC, Chennai*ARVINDSWAMY*

Age: 16 years

During the lockdown: Positive changes in communication and helping at home. 

Communication & Socialising: His understanding of what is beign told to him has improved. He has understood the current situation once it was explained to him. He is also trying to express his needs. For example, he brings his mother's new saris to her when he wants to go out. 

He has developed a bond with his younger brother and loves to be with him. He always calls him to join for his regular beach walks. He cooperates well with his brother and does all his school activities with him. 

Activities of daily living: He is now 90% independent in all ADLs. He has also developed a good habit and routine fo going for regular walks on the beach.   

Helping at home: He helps very well in the household chores. He dries the clothes and clears vessels after eating.  

New skills learnt: He has learnt to do household chores and simple dance steps. 


 Vidhyut - Star of October 2020, ELC, Chennai*VIDHYUT*

Age: 13 years

During the lockdown: Positive changes in communication and doing activities. He has understood and accepted the lockdown situation very well. He has remained calm and cooperative throughout this time. Even though he likes to go for rounds on the scooter, he never asked for it knowing well that it is not safe to go out. 

Communication & Socialising: His first gesture of communication happened during lockdown. He is also being taught how to use the Avaz communication app. He enjoys being with the entire family - mother, father and sister. He looks forward to tea time together and sometimes helps his mother to make the tea.

Activities of daily living: He has become independent in brushing, bathing and wearing his shorts.

Helping at home: He helps by folding clothes, mopping the house, keeping things in their respective places and sometimes helps his mother in the kitchen. 

New skills learnt: He would always avoid learning new things. However, since the lockdown and joing Ekadaksha, his mother has been able to do concrete activities in a systematic way. He is thus showing interest to learn new concepts. He is learning to type on the computer. He loves food which has led to an interest in cokking. He sometimes observes and helps his mother in the kitchen.
