A day for exploring the five senses - "Sensory activities" was planned and conducted by Ms.Mathumitha,Special educator,ELC.
The five basic senses - Sight,Hearing,Smell,Taste,Touch and the corresponding sensory organs - Eyes,Ears,Nose,Tongue and Skin help us understand and perceive the world around us.The sensory processing system of children with special needs works in a unique way for every child.At Ekadaksha,opportunities are given for the children to explore the five senses and a multi sensory approach is followed while doing activities.
This time,a different set of activities were planned for the children to explore and enjoy.
Each room was arranged with things corresponding to the five senses and children came class wise to each room,explored the sensory things and had a relaxing time.
Sight - See through color papers - red,green,blue colors were kept and children enjoyed seeing through the color papers.In bottles,water and oil were mixed and kept and by shaking them the children saw and observed the movement of the liquid in different forms.
Hearing - Stuffs like pompom balls,stones,sooji,rubberbands,coins,flour were filled in different bottles.As the children shook them,they observed different kind of sounds coming while shaking the bottles - Each bottle producing sound according to the material filled in it. There were also bowls kept - Plastic bowl,Steel bowl,Wooden bowl and while banging them with stick,each produced different sound.
Smell - Agarbathi doop,Attar,Thailam,Rice,Cinnamon sticks were kept in plates.Children took the plates one by one and sensed the different types of smells.
Taste - Things of different tastes were arranged - Salt,Tomato puree,Sugar,Lemon,Coffee and children tasted each of them and were able to make out the different tastes.
Touch - Trays containing varied textured materials were arranged - Cork,Thermocoal balls,Rough stones,Smooth stones.Children enjoyed putting their hands inside and felt the different textures of each material.
Activities done to explore the five senses and giving a multi sensory input helps children understand and internalize things taught in an effective manner.
