An experiment using the principle of surface tension - "The Magic Talcum powder experiment" was planned and conducted by Ms.J.Sumangali,Special educator,Ekadaksha Learning Center.
The experiment demonstrates the concept of surface tension and how it can be disrupted by soap.Talcum powder when sprinkled on water floats due to surface tension.Adding soap breaks the surface tension, causing the powder to be repelled away from the soap, thus creating a visual "magic" effect.
The Teacher first demonstrated the experiment. The children did the experiment individually sitting along with their house groups.Food colours were used in water to make it colourful. The children were given simple, clear instructions and they did the experiment independently listening to the instructions.
- Take the bowl, pour water
- Add food colour
- Sprinkle the talcum powder
- Take the ear bud - dip into vim liquid solution
- Place the bud in the center of the water.
Children followed these instructions and most of them did their part independently, while few of them needed little prompt.
All children love doing science experiments. Our children deserve the joy of it too. With a little simplification of the experiment, by making the instructions simple and arranging the materials beforehand our children too can explore doing experiments. The sense of accomplishment and smiles is all what we saw when our children did the science experiment themselves.
