What we do - Ekadaksha Learning Center Chennai - By Stephen Eastop

Traffic rules and Road safety is an important aspect which a child has to learn. Creating awareness about Road Safety and conducting activities to gain first hand knowledge about Traffic rules and Road Safety is done in schools. This enables the children to understand and follow the basic rules while they travel to school and other places using the different modes of transport or while walking on the roads.

“Traffic rules and Road Safety” activity was conducted by Ms.J.Sumangali,Special educator,ELC.

The activity was carried out in four parts. Each house group children demonstrated one traffic rule and road safety aspect.

Yellow house – Demonstrated how to follow the traffic signals.

Green house – Demonstrated the road safety rules while travelling in vehicles

Blue house – Demonstrated the road lane concept

Red house – Demonstrated the zebra crossing

Following the Traffic Signal – The traffic signal concept of Stop(Red),Get ready(Orange),and Go(Green) was demonstrated by the yellow house children through a fun game. When the teacher showed 'Green signal' flash card and said 'GO', the children ran around in a circle. When the teacher showed the 'Red signal' flash card and said 'STOP', the children stopped and stood like statues. When the teacher showed 'Orange signal' flash card, they got ready to run and when the green card was shown again, they started running. This game was played 3-4 rounds. The children learnt to follow the traffic signal while going on the road – Red means stop,Orange means get ready and Green means go.

Road Safety – Green house children demonstrated the road safety rules. The children wore helmets to demonstrate that on a two wheeler both the rider and the pillion rider should wear helmets. They wore seatbelts and demonstrated that while travelling by car, we must wear  seatbelts to be safe.

Road Lane Concept – Blue house children demonstrated the road lane concept. The city roads and the highways have different lanes for two wheeler, four wheeler and separate lanes for heavy vehicles. Lanes were drawn on the floor and the teacher marked them “Bike Lane” and “Car Lane”. Children were given vehicles – Car and Bikes. They were guided to ride their vehicles in the appropriate lanes.

Zebra crossing – The Red house children demonstrated how to cross using the zebra crossing. A mock set up of the zebra crossing was made using black chart and white chart. The teacher made the children cross the zebra crossing and while doing so,she explained that we must look carefully before crossing.

This activity gave a basic knowledge about the Traffic rules and road safety. The children also understood the “do’s and don’t’s" while going on the road.
