What we do - Ekadaksha Learning Center Chennai - By Stephen Eastop

Kabaddi 1: The first time we played Kabaddi.

Ms. Sumangali, Special educator at ELC conducted the game "Kabbadi"  which was modified a little in order to suit our children.

The houses to play against each other were chosen using chits.Of the chosen two houses, one team had to run and one had to catch. The child from the catching team chose which child he/she will catch by pointing on Avaz. The running team had to run within a set boundary while the catcher came to catch the child he/she chose. The teachers kept chanting "Kabbadi kabbadi" during this time. The game continued till all children got a chance to run and catch each other.

The children enjoyed themselves inspite of not understanding all the rules. They understood that they must run. The game was so much fun and a new experience for the teachers and the children as well.

Kabaddi 2: The second time we played kabaddi.

Ms.Ganga, Volunteer at ELC conducted Kabaddi once again by incorporating points learnt from the feedback of the first time we played the game.

To make the children understand “Run” and “Catch” a demo was given before the game begun. Visual images of “Run” and “Catch” was shown and explained to the children while they entered the kabbadi field.

The house who were runners were shown the card “Run” with their house teacher holding the “Run card” in front of them. The house who were catchers were shown the card “Catch” with their house teacher holding the “Catch card” in front of them.

For the catchers to choose the child to catch from the opponent house group, the photos of the children in the group were displayed in Avaz to help them choose the person easily. The teachers had to guide the children appropriately. The running and catching was repeated till all the children from the four houses – Red,Blue,Green and Yellow got their chances to run and catch each other respectively.

Thus,by incorporating a few more modifications suit our children, the second time the game was played with much more clarity. The children were able to understand the rules and enjoyed the game of Kabbadi.
